About
Welcome to my professional webpage! I am an associate professor of politics at the University of Virginia, specializing in political theory. My interests include the political ethics of non-governmental organizations, humanitarianism, democratic theory (especially theories of non-electoral representation and advocacy that attend to global inequalities), emergency politics and its alternatives, and the relationship between money and democracy (especially in the context of monetary donations). I have published articles in the Journal of Politics, Journal of Political Philosophy, Journal of Social Philosophy and Policy, Perspectives on Politics and the British Journal of Political Science, among other venues. You can read more about my book, Between Samaritans and States: the Political Ethics of Humanitarian INGOs (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2015), here, and more about my research interests here.
Before coming to UVa I was the Cotsen-Link post-doctoral fellow in the Society of Fellows at Princeton University. I received my PhD from the University of Chicago. I am originally from Rochester, NY, which makes me pretty tough (when it comes to weather, at least). In my spare time, I enjoy running (well, jogging), growing vegetables, playing harmonica (badly) and learning to cook Ethiopian food (also badly, despite now having many terrific spices).
